Autumn Coastal Breaks in Scarborough
Quieter beaches, crisp coastal air and a more relaxed pace make autumn a perfect time for a break by the sea. Check AvailabilityWhy We Love Autumn on the Yorkshire Coast
Autumn is one of the most rewarding times to visit Scarborough, when the pace slows, the coastline opens up and the town takes on a more relaxed feel. With quieter beaches, crisp coastal air and plenty to explore, it’s an ideal time for a short break by the sea.
Autumn is hands-down our favourite season for exploring the Yorkshire Coast on foot. After the busy summer months, the paths quieten down, the light turns beautifully soft and golden, and the air feels crisp and invigorating. We walk these routes ourselves as often as we can — it’s something we genuinely look forward to every year. There’s a special magic in walking when the heather is fading, the trees are turning amber and gold, and you often have long stretches of coastline almost to yourselves. The ground is still mostly dry from summer, the days are still long enough for a proper wander, and the whole experience feels more peaceful and rewarding than any other time of year.
Autumn dates are often popular for short breaks and weekends, so it’s always worth checking availability early to secure your preferred stay.
Why Visit Scarborough in Autumn?
Autumn offers a quieter and more relaxed way to experience Scarborough. The summer crowds have eased, the coastline feels more open and the changing colours across the parks and gardens add something special to a stay by the sea.
It’s a great time for walking, exploring and enjoying the town at your own pace, with plenty to see and do without feeling rushed.
The Perfect Time for Coastal Walks
After walking most of the routes we recommend, we can honestly say autumn brings the best conditions:
- Beautiful golden light — especially in the late afternoon
- Still relatively dry paths from the summer months
- Fewer people — you can enjoy the views in peace
- Crisp but comfortable temperatures — ideal for walking
Whether you prefer an easy 3-mile loop around Peasholm Park or a more challenging clifftop walk towards Burniston or Filey, autumn delivers some of the most rewarding experiences on the coast.
Our Favourite Autumn Walks from Seaside Hideaway
Here are some of the routes we walk ourselves and regularly recommend to guests:
North Bay & Peasholm Park Loop (Easy – 2.5 to 3 miles)
One of our go-to walks. The trees around the park turn beautiful shades of gold and the little railway often runs later into the season.
Scarborough to Burniston (Moderate – 5 to 9 miles)
A fantastic clifftop walk with ever-changing views. We love doing this in autumn when the light is softer and the paths are quieter.
Scarborough to Whitby via the Cleveland Way (Challenging – long day)
For the more adventurous — dramatic cliffs and incredible scenery. Best saved for a clear autumn day.
We’re always happy to chat through the routes, suggest the best direction, or share our favourite spots for a coffee stop along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions we’re often asked about autumn coastal breaks in Scarborough. We’ve walked most of these routes ourselves, so we can give you honest, practical advice.
When is the best time for autumn walks in Scarborough?
Late September through to mid-November offers the best combination of colour, weather and daylight. We personally find early to mid-October particularly beautiful, with warm golden light in the late afternoon.
What should I wear for coastal walks in autumn?
Layers are essential. We recommend a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking boots or shoes with good grip, and a warm fleece or mid-layer. Even on dry days the sea breeze can feel surprisingly chilly, especially on the clifftops.
Are the paths muddy in autumn?
Most of the routes we recommend stay surprisingly good because they benefit from the drier summer months. The clifftop sections are usually fine, but we always suggest proper footwear just in case, especially after rain.
Is autumn a good time for walking with Seaside Hideaway as a base?
It’s one of our favourite seasons. The hotel is quiet and peaceful, the walks are less crowded, and you can return to a warm welcome, comfortable rooms, and Sarah’s homemade treats after a day on the coast.
How far in advance should I book an autumn break?
We recommend booking 6–10 weeks ahead for the best choice of rooms, especially for weekends in October when the autumn colours are at their peak.
