Peaceful walks, cosy rooms and warm hospitality on the Yorkshire coast.
Why Visit Scarborough in Autumn?
Summer may bring the busiest days to the Yorkshire Coast, but autumn brings a very different kind of beauty. The beaches become quieter, the light softens, the coastal paths feel wonderfully open and the sea begins to show its more dramatic side.
Scarborough remains full of things to see and do, but the pace feels calmer. You can walk beside the sea, explore Peasholm Park, follow the
Cleveland Way, enjoy a theatre performance or simply take time to sit with a drink and watch the weather roll across the bay.
Seaside Hideaway Hotel offers a peaceful adults-only base in Scarborough’s North Bay, close to the beach, Peasholm Park, Marine Drive and some of the finest coastal walking routes in Yorkshire. Breakfast is included, free off-road parking is available and relaxed
evening dining is offered throughout the week, except Sundays.
Why Jim & Sarah Love Autumn
We walk the Scarborough coastline throughout the year, but autumn has a character all of its own. Some mornings are calm and beautifully
clear; others bring mist, dramatic skies or powerful seas. It is the unpredictability that makes every day feel different.

Autumn on the Yorkshire Coast, Month by Month
Autumn does not arrive all at once. Each part of the season brings a different reason to visit Scarborough.
September: Late-Summer Light
September often still feels wonderfully mild, with long enough days for coastal walks and outdoor exploring. The main summer crowds have eased, but Scarborough still feels lively and open.
It is a lovely time for walking towards Filey, Burniston or Ravenscar, enjoying the gardens and spending quieter time beside North Bay.
October: Colour, Walking and Open Space
October brings changing colours to Peasholm Park, Peasholm Glen and the South Cliff Gardens. Cooler air makes longer walks comfortable, while the lower sun creates beautiful light along the coast.
It is one of our favourite months for combining time outdoors with relaxed evenings back at the hotel.
November: Dramatic Seas and Cosy Evenings
November is when the Yorkshire Coast begins to feel at its most dramatic. Stronger winds, powerful waves and fast-changing skies create some unforgettable views around North Bay and Marine Drive.
After a bracing walk, return to a comfortable room, a home-cooked meal and a drink in the lounge.
Autumn Walking on the Yorkshire Coast
Autumn is a wonderful season for walking. The air is cooler, the paths are generally quieter and the changing light brings new character to familiar coastal views.
From Seaside Hideaway you can choose anything from a gentle walk around Peasholm Park and North Bay to a full-day route along the Cleveland Way or Cinder Track.
Scarborough to Filey
Follow the coastline south past the South Cliff Gardens, Cornelian Bay and Cayton Bay before continuing towards Filey Brigg. The route
offers dramatic clifftop views and a real sense of open space.
North Towards Ravenscar and Whitby
Head north along the coast or join the Cinder Track towards Burniston, Cloughton, Ravenscar, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby.
Several points along the route offer bus connections back to Scarborough.
Shorter Walks from the Hotel
Peasholm Park, North Bay, Marine Drive and the harbour can all be woven into shorter routes directly from the hotel, making it easy
to enjoy the coast without committing to a full-day walk.

Watch the Yorkshire Coast Come Alive
Autumn does not always mean calm seas and golden leaves. Some of the most memorable days arrive when the wind strengthens and the waves begin to build along Scarborough’s coastline.
North Bay, Marine Drive and the castle headland can offer spectacular views of the sea in motion. Even when the weather is wild, there is something compelling about watching the waves from a safe viewpoint before returning somewhere warm and comfortable.
Jim & Sarah’s Storm-Watching Tip
We always recommend enjoying rough seas from a safe distance. Marine Drive and the higher viewpoints around the castle can provide dramatic views without standing close to exposed sea walls or breaking waves.
However please follow local warnings and never take unnecessary risks for a photograph.
Autumn Colour in Scarborough
Scarborough is known for its coastline, but its parks, gardens and sheltered valleys are equally rewarding during autumn.
Peasholm Park and Peasholm Glen
The lake, wooded slopes and sheltered glen make Peasholm one of the loveliest places for an autumn walk. Follow the path around the lake, explore the glen and stop for a warm drink at the café.
South Cliff Gardens
The gardens stretch along Scarborough’s South Cliff, with winding paths, viewpoints, sheltered corners and access towards the
Spa and Clock Café.
Coastal Light
Lower autumn sun creates beautiful light around North Bay, the castle headland, South Bay and Filey Brigg. Clear mornings can be particularly special for photography.
Plenty to Enjoy Whatever the Weather
Autumn weather can change quickly, but that does not mean losing a day. Scarborough offers plenty of indoor attractions, performances and relaxed places to explore when you want a break from the coast.
Stephen Joseph Theatre
Scarborough’s famous theatre-in-the-round hosts drama, comedy and new productions throughout the year. It is an excellent choice for an autumn evening in town.
Scarborough Spa
The Spa hosts concerts, comedy, entertainment and seasonal events in its historic South Bay setting.
Museums, Cafés and Independent Shops
Spend time exploring Scarborough’s museums, galleries, independent shops and cafés before returning to North Bay for a relaxed evening.
Whitby, Filey and the North York Moors
Seaside Hideaway is well placed for day trips along the coast and inland towards the North York Moors, giving you plenty of options
throughout a longer stay.
